~ Papa Legba ~

Like the coward I was, I retreated to the shadows away from Mic. She was still as hauntingly beautiful as the day I met her. Completely tattooed from head to toe with the skeletal features only the Queen of Souls could have. Her dark eyes shone under the moonlight and her long black hair hung down her back with a braided crown around her forehead. My Spanish Viking that made my heart ache at the sight of her every time.

Talking to her, touching her hand felt like new life had been breathed back into me. Has it really been decades since we last saw one another? The loss of the twins nearly drove her mad and I was unable to be with her in all that time. While I could communicate with the other side, I was not of Aztec origin which forbade me from entering the gates of Mictlan.

Turning against the brick wall, I leaned my forehead against the cold wall, wanting to bash my head against it. I was too late to warn her and all the children had been kidnapped. Now how was I supposed to help her? She already blames me for the death of the twins. If she finds out that I knew about the attacks on the souls, she’ll end up blaming me for that too.

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I had been holding in when a voice whispered over my shoulder, “Coward.”

“Shut up!” I told my tormentor.

“She’ll never forgive you. You’ll always be the reason your children are dead. It’s all your fault,” it kept on.

“I said shut up!” I hollered at it as a couple walked by.

They paused, staring weirdly at me. “Mister, are you okay?” the guy asked.

“Yeah.” I pointed at my ear, “Sorry, arguing with someone,” I lied, trying to play it off.

“Oh...okay,” he answered as his girlfriend squeezed a little tighter onto his arm.

Tonight always takes its toll on me but seeing Mic after all this time and on the anniversary of our kids’ deaths was making it harder. I’ll give myself time to pull it together then I need to find Mic and help her get the souls of the children of Mictlan back.
